Forest Monitoring
Monitor forest cover, change, deforestation, degradation, alerts and fire.
Open Forest MonitoringReliable data, knowledge and tools to monitor, manage and conserve Kenya’s forests for people and nature.
Kenya’s National Forest Monitoring System – Forest Information Platform (NFMS-FIP) is the national platform for collecting, integrating, analysing and sharing information about Kenya’s forests and forest ecosystems.
It brings together forest inventories, satellite Earth observation, GIS, field data and scientific analysis to support sustainable forest management, conservation, restoration, climate action and informed decision-making.
The NFMS also supports Kenya’s forest-related greenhouse gas monitoring, reporting and verification under the UNFCCC, including REDD+ and other national and international reporting.
Tracks progress from 5.8% forest cover (2018) towards the constitutional target of at least 10%.
Provides the evidence for Kenya’s REDD+ results and UNFCCC reporting, measured against the national Forest Reference Level.
Official, validated and openly documented forest data for planning by national and county governments, researchers and the public.
Monitor forest cover, change, deforestation, degradation, alerts and fire.
Open Forest MonitoringExplore interactive maps, dashboards, restoration, biodiversity and county forest information.
Open Forest Data & MapsDiscover datasets, metadata, data standards, downloads, APIs and knowledge resources.
Open Data & KnowledgeFigures from the National Forest Reference Level for REDD+ are available with interactive charts under MRV & Climate.
An interactive map, charts and figures of forest cover 2010–2018 and degraded forest for each county.
A working preview of the portal is available to KFS colleagues for comments on content, structure and design.
The NFMS is implemented by the Kenya Forest Service with national institutions, universities and development partners.
